Gemba: ‘Going to Gemba’ is about being physically present in the space where value is created and evaluating that workspace for potential opportunities for efficiency with purposeful awareness. It’s one of the guiding principles of lean manufacturing. Every morning at 8AM, our Caring Associates gather to spend 5 to 10 minutes addressing challenges or concerns, and reviewing their individual and team goals for the day. These daily meetings keep team members informed and on target each day.

Challenge buster: A ‘Challenge-Buster Meeting’ is a daily meeting for Cogmedix Associates from the operations, manufacturing, engineering, quality engineering, quality inspection, and supply chain management departments. The goal of these meetings is to discuss the unique challenges presented during the commercialization process and to assign accountability to each department to ‘bust’ their respective challenges. It also gives team members a visual of all the challenges presented, and the available methods to address them. This collaborative, visual strategy is part of our lean journey.

P-Card board: Production Card Boards, or P-Cards, are used to represent and track a component or device as it progresses through production stages. The card indicates how many of the component must be completed that day to stay on schedule. It also updates team members on the production status of that device for the week and forecasts upcoming needs. Once the necessary number of components are completed and ready to move to an integration stage, the P-Card moves with the component. When the component is delivered, the P-Card is returned to the P-Card board. The P-Cards system is a great visualization tool that compliments the data in our world-class ERP system to create a comprehensive management overview.

6S tool tray: To keep their workspaces running efficiently, our Caring Associates utilize blue tool trays which keep everything in its proper place to minimize downtime spent searching for equipment. 6S Lean manufacturing principles apply not only to workspaces, but also to other operational areas, including documentation.
Quality bulletin board: Our quality bulletin board provides a high level snapshot of the quality metrics, status updates and goals for each project. Applying lean manufacturing strategies is a top priority: Caring Associates that take initiative on activities and move them toward these goals are recognized and rewarded.

Automated supply dispenser: For all consumable materials that are not included on the bill of materials, our Caring Associates utilize an automated supply dispenser. The machines are connected to a network for auto-replenishment to accommodate need based on past use and digitally-maintained inventory levels for maximum efficiency.
EOED kiosk: The EOED kiosk was installed as a way to digitally collect feedback, suggestions, and requests from our Caring Associates. The senior leadership team reviews every submission and initiates any that are actionable. Caring Associates are rewarded for providing frequent input, with a focus on the most impactful ideas.
