The winning products in this year’s Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) competition, presented by UBM Canon, were announced in Philadelphia on May 23. The finalists were honored for their innovations to the MedTech industry. Each product was reviewed by a panel of third-party jurors with expertise in biomedical engineering, clinical practice, diagnostics, human factors, industrial design, manufacturing, and medicine. Twenty five products were selected in ten medical categories.

In the rehabilitation and assistive-technology product category the BiOM Ankle prosthetic device was named as the silver winner. The BiOM Ankle was manufactured and submitted by iWalk Inc., with supply [device contract manufacturing] credit to Cogmedix. As the premiere medical device contract manufacturer in the northeast, Cogmedix manufacturers iWalk’s BiOM Ankle at its ISO 13485 certified and FDA QSR compliant facility in West Boylston, Massachusetts. Services such as inventory management, assembly, test, final packaging and order fulfillment are provided by Cogmedix.

With the selection of Cogmedix as its core contract manufacturing partner, iWalk is able to focus on their core technology development, continued product innovation, and marketing efforts; while feeling confident the BiOM is built in an environment that has strict compliance adherence in its DNA. Beyond the critical quality and compliance aspects, outsourcing to Cogmedix also helps iWalk optimize their ability to react to demand fluctuations, improves their cost structure, and reduces the amount of overhead investment required in establishing and maintaining a cGMP manufacturing environment.
